Tattooists are artists and normally love the challenge of a custom design. They may ask for an art fee to draw it up, which usually is put towards the cost of the tattoo when you come back in. Some do, some don’t. If you’re waiting right there while they draw it up, usually they won’t ask for money. Either way, remember a good tattoo isn’t cheap and a cheap tattoo isn’t good. It’s something that will be with you forever so look at it as an investment. Best bet is to go to a reputable shop, look at their work (they should have a portfolio printed or online of their tattoos) and ask them about your design. Some pictures are not "tattoo friendly" and might require tweaking. Either way, the relationship you develop with your tattooist is a special part of the process, so find one you click with and let the creativity begin. If you find someone that makes you uncomfortable, go elsewhere. It should be a pleasant experience.
